So how do we say thank you for all that care and attention? In the United States they traditionally give carnations on Mother’s Day. Carnations are great value, especially if you are on a budget – very longlasting flowers, and keenly priced.If you’re used to the spray carnations with their small flowerheads, you might be surprised by “standard” carnations. They have big frilly flowers in gorgeous colours, sometimes stripey. “Prado” is a lovely variety, in a fresh minty green; and there are new antique-style varieties in vintage fashion shades. What if you are looking for something more unusual to show your mum how much you care? Down Under, in Australia, they give ‘mums to their mums on Mother’s Day - or chrysanthemums! Chrysanthemums are usually thought of as an autumn flower, or something cheap to fill out a bouquet. I think this is unfair! In the wintertime you can find “bloom” chrysanthemums, which have enormous frilly flowerheads. They look very exotic and only have a short availability.
